Welcome the Gazette's prep football live chat! We're joined by special guest Mike Morrissey, head coach of Cedar Rapids Prairie today. Our prep reporters will ask Coach questions, and you should too!
Good evening, all! I see I am first, other than Sam!
And that makes me second.
Thank you guys for having me tonight.
Excited for the chat. Good to have Coach Morrissey here!
It's always good when I get to spend some time talking football with you guys!
Thanks for joining coach. The Hawks are 1-1. Are they set for a good run, starting with Dubuque Senior Friday?
I feel like we are moving in the right direction. Like all teams this early we are still trying get better each week and find out where are strengths and weaknesses are. Hopefully we can take that win and build from it going forward
What do you see in Senior, Coach, that concerns you most?
HawkFan I felt like overall it was not letting the game get away from us. Our kids did a really nice job of coming together when things got tough
Senior is a scary team because they are confident right now. Coming off two wins can really make practice fun, make a team excited to go out and compete again. They are well coached and look like they have some size up front
Excluding Hawks, who would be your choice of starting QB and RB for a prep fantasy teram in the IC/Metro area?
Bryce has been solid. We moved him back inside to guard this last week to help out more inside and that helped make the difference for us a few times. He is still adjusting to playing some defense but overall he has been what we expected him to be this fall.
That is for Morrissey and all of us.
Trey Beckman and JoJo Simpson get a lot of the attention individually for your team, but who else has stepped for your team so far this season?
I have to go with Jesse Furrow and Jake Brinkman
Wow, that's a tough one. Being that I have only really seen the kids from Linn-Mar and Jefferson at QB those are two really good ones to pick from. I think the QB at Wash is as competitive as they get also.
Re: prep fantasy team: Drew Cook and Jake Brinkman as well.
At the running back position I think Brinkman would get my vote as well.
My reserves would be Ryan Schmidt and Tavian Patrick (LIked what I've seen from him in twoi games)
I would go Furrow or Schmidt at QB. Gotta think about the RB.
We have a few guys that stick out for me. Ben Boldt as been outstanding. He has really become our leader both on and off the field. Coen Brown is another senior who has done a great job and Keagan Pinter has made some big plays for us.
So many good options. Furrow and Schmidt definitely have been really good so far.
It's a good year for QBs in the Metro, that's for sure.
That's tough to pick HawkFan. All of our games are tough ones. We usually focus on the next one and go from there. Right now Washington has to be up there as a tough one, North Scott has started strong and so has Senior. We try to treat them all the same way.
This being your FOURTH season (not fifth), how has your approached changed since your first season when you took over at Prairie? Easier? Harder?
Initially I think we were all a little bit hesitant with it but overall I think it's been great. It's provided a lot of interesting and competitive match ups that we normally wouldn't have seen. It's tough on travel at times but really to prepare for someone new is refreshing for us as coaches and for the players.
I feel like it's easier at this point. We have started to build our youth program up and have had a lot of help with that. I know the kids, know the staff and we just continue to try to build on things each year.
Coach, you had a really close game with Jefferson Friday that you were able to win. Does a team learn more from a close win like that, or a close loss?
I think Washington is a very good football team. As athletic of a team as we have in our area. They have experience and size up front on both sides and their defense plays fast. Their offense fits the personnel they have and they create great match up issues for defenses they play.
I think it really depends on the team. Our team right now needed that win. Just from a confidence standpoint. To understand that the hard work does pay off in the end.
Speaking of the meal, Coach, do you have any game day superstitions?
JZ, have not had lately! Might have to bring it back this week. Good luck to you as well!
Yes unfortunately I do! I wear the same clothes each game day. Try to eat the same things and stay on a routine as much as possible. I probably get that from my dad!
Week 2, My top two surprises were Cedar Falls losing to Ames and the margin of victory for Washington over Kennedy. Just to toot my own horn. Either here or the podcast, I predict Carroll to handle Harlan.
